Free training for older adults, their caregivers, church or agency staff is available through Tri-County Mental Health Services.
Lynn Vanderweel, Older Adult Care coordinator, said a wide range of topics are offered, from battling depression, dementia and delirium, to Medicare and the Affordable Care Act.
“We have a number of topics that are really helpful to anyone who works with or cares for older adults, as well as older residents themselves,” Vanderweel explained. “Many of these topics deal with some of the most widespread issues faced by older adults and their friends. Other subjects have been requested by church or community groups.”
Although several topics are the outgrowth of scientific study, many have surprisingly everyday experience. For example, depression among older adults is often overlooked, but can have serious complications, including worsening of physical ailments. Yet some solutions may include something as simple as socializing—just talking to others.
“The key thing is to recognize and deal with these issues,” Vanderweel concluded. “That’s why we want to arm our caregivers and support groups with knowledge and techniques. The solutions are often pretty simple if you know them.”
