The annual Operation Smoke Screen Summit was held March 5 will middle-school-aged representatives and adult volunteers from throughout Clay, Platte and Ray counties.
Students from throughout the region joined in activities to promote a healthy lifestyle and discuss the dangers of smoke. One of the highlights was a mock city council meeting at which an organance baning smoking was passed.
The event was hosted by Tri-County Mental Health Services to help middle school students learn how they can become advocates for community issues. The young people attended sessions on how to work with print and broadcast media to promote their opinions on issues and events. During a mock city council meeting focused on the possible banning of smoking in public venues in Anytown USA, the students presented the positions of several community groups and businesses to the council. Clay County Prosecutor Dan White portrayed the mayor at the event. Following the exchange of opinions and media reports, the Anytown USA City Council unanimously passed the no-smoking ordinance.
