The West Platte Community in Action (CIA) Coalition was featured during the “Sparkling Moment” presentation at the March 15 Northland Coalition luncheon meeting.

West Platte Jr.-Sr. High School Counselor Corrine Allee presented information on the various healthy lifestyle programs and events sponsored by the CIA coalition with the support of Tri-County Mental Health Services, Inc.

The Activity Trading Card Program is among the successful substance abuse prevention programs of the coalition. The program seeks out high school students who will commit to leading substance free lifestyles to serve as mentors to younger students.

Banners and posters featuring photos of the young leaders are displayed throughout the community, and trading cards with their photos are distributed to grade school students in the district when the mentor-students visit them in their school.

The program has seen increasing student participation over the course of its three years.

“The first year of the program we had 43% student participation,” Allee said. “The second year, we saw an increase to 65% - and this year, I’m happy to report, we are enjoying a 70% student participation.”

Membership in the coalition is free and anyone living or working in the West Platte district area is welcome to join the CIA to assist them in promoting a safe, substance abuse free environment for area youth and the community.

The next meeting will be held April 4 at 3:30 p.m. in the library of West Platte Jr.-Sr. High School, 935 Washington St., Weston. For more information about CIA contact Allee at (816) 640-2292, ext. 2054 or
